Madrid is the capital of Spain and the largest city in both the Community of Madrid and Spain. The population of the city is almost 3.3 million with the city area of around 6.5 million. Madrid is the third-largest city in the European Union (EU) after London and Berlin. Madrid is best known for its great cultural and artistic heritage, a good example of which is the El Prado Museum and is home to the Spanish Royal family as well as the Spanish Government. Madrid is located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, and is surrounded by mountains and natural parks. Therefore Madrid is connected to all major cities of Spain by train, road or air. The climate of Madrid is continental; mainly dry and quite extreme at times. Madrid sees perpetual sunshine, a characteristically hot and dry summer, and a fairly cold winter with frequent frosts during the night and the occasional snowfall. Spring and autumn are mild with the most rainfall concentrated in these seasons. The city has a lot of interesting attractions points that offer both culture and amusement. It is full of great monuments, like the royal palace, the Plaza Mayor or the many statuettes, and for people interested in art, the museums Del Prado, Reina Sofia or Thyssen have some of the most fantastic collections of famous Spanish painters like Velazquez, Goya, Picasso or Miro. Madrid has a very interesting nightlife throughout the whole week for the people who loves going out at night. It is a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs open late into the night.
